Why does Skyline need to carry out KYC?

Many customers using a financial service for the first time ask: “Why do I need to provide identification, proof of address or proof of source of funds?” The reason is that legitimate financial institutions must comply with New Zealand’s anti-money laundering and countering financing of terrorism laws.

Information you may be asked for

Depending on the customer’s circumstances and transaction risk, Skyline may ask for:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of address
  • Bank account details
  • Proof of source of funds
  • The purpose of the transaction and supporting documents
  • Other necessary compliance information

How the information is used

This information helps Skyline to: confirm the customer’s identity → understand the source of funds → understand the purpose of the transaction → assess risk → ensure the transaction complies with the relevant laws. We understand that providing information can take time, but thorough compliance review is an essential part of a legitimate financial service. Compliance is not an obstacle to a transaction; it is an important safeguard for customers and the financial system.

Identity and address information

KYC means knowing your customer. The team may ask for identification and proof of your current address, and explain the requirements for the documents. Confirm accepted types, issue dates, certification or translation before submitting.

Source of funds and source of wealth

Source of funds concerns where the money for a particular transaction came from. Source of wealth concerns how a person’s overall assets were acquired. The team will explain which information is relevant to the transaction and review.

Prepare the information relevant to your situation

Start with the specific list provided by the team and check that it supports your explanation.

  • Customer identity and address information.
  • Funding and recipient account details and the relationship between the parties.
  • An explanation of the transaction purpose and how the funds were obtained.
  • Supporting documents requested for that explanation, and business information where relevant.

Use a confirmed submission channel

Ask where and how to provide sensitive documents. Check the contact and destination before sending. Do not share passwords, verification codes or full documents with an unverified contact. Keep copies of what you submitted.

If information is missing or inconsistent

Explain differences in names, addresses, account ownership or supporting records to the team before proceeding. Ask what additional information is appropriate. Providing documents does not itself guarantee account approval or transaction acceptance.

Frequently asked questions

Do all customers need to provide the same source-of-funds documents?

No. The information depends on the customer, purpose, transaction and review. Ask Skyline for the specific documents relevant to your circumstances.

Does a bank balance alone explain the source of funds?

A balance shows funds held, but may not explain how they were obtained. Ask the team which explanation and supporting information are appropriate for the transaction.

Can I send identity documents to any email address that contacts me?

Verify the contact and use the submission channel confirmed by Skyline. Do not send sensitive files to an unverified address or share passwords or verification codes.
